When it comes to smoking cigars everyone has this ideal image of sitting in a nice chair with a glass of aged scotch and a Cuban sparked up between their lips, but you may not need to go to Cuba to find the right cigar. America has been producing cigars for years and although they may not have the novelty of a Cuban, for the past 25 years many smokers have been happy with their choice to pull on the end of an Avanti.

Avanti Cigars

The Bourbon and Anisette flavor is packed with fresh tobacco grown strictly in Kentucky and Tennessee because the nutrients in the soil help create a heavy flavor that is bound to leave a warm feeling in your stomach and a little light headedness as well. After the 100% real tobacco is machine-rolled, an Avanti is dry-cured in hickory smoke and aged four months to reach maximum flavor.

If you thought a 60 ring gauge cigar was big, then you have never seen a 2,304 gauge cigar. If you live near Orlando though, you can go see it for the next few days.

A cigar measuring 19 feet long, three feet in diameter, and weighing a massive 1,600 pounds is on display at Corona Cigar Co. in Orlando. The cigar was made in Honduras by Gran Habano Cigar Co.

According to the makers, the giant cigar was made with 16,000 wrapper leaves, and it took a team of twenty nearly three weeks to make it. The makers have valued it at $200,000, and they claim it is smokeable. There is no word on who exactly is allegedly supposed to be physically capable of smoking it.

Corona Cigar owner Jeff Borysiewicz has stated that he brought the humongous cigar to Orlando as a form of protest against a new law that has outlawed smoking or using smokeless tobacco outdoors on Orange County property. Orange County employees are also required to limit their tobacco use. According to the Cigar Rights of America, that limit is no more than four cigars per year.

The statement being made is that if people are only allowed four cigars per year, they might as well be massive cigars. Hilarious.

Recently Hop-On Inc and USAcig Inc., maker of the electric cigarette, announced that they are developing an electric Cuban Cigar that they claim will taste similar to an authentic hand-rolled Cuban Cigar.

According to Peter Michaels, President of Hop-On:

“We are working with a couple of sources in Latin America that who have access to the authentic plants used in the making of the famous Havana Cigars. These plants were taken on a boat out of Cuba to another foreign country, carried by mules over hundreds of miles through treacherous mountains and ended up in the fields where we have access to. We will use the natural nicotine from the tobacco plants and capture the flavors of the world famous cigars. Because the US has a trade embargo with Cuba, we are forced to take these steps in order to provide the most authentic flavors. The Electric Cuban Cigar will come in a collector’s wooden box with 5 Cuban flavored cartridges. Smokers can enjoy the real Cuban cigar taste!”

Needless to say, we are very skeptical about this product. Many real cigars attempt to replicate the experience of Cubans and fall well short. If an electronic device an accurately recreate the experience of a Cuban, we will be shocked and impressed.

Of course, the electric cuban cigar is the favorite cigar of Castrobot.

Every cigar smoker knows the brand name of Cohiba. It is a brand associated with excellence, great cigars, and unfortunately for Americans, Cohiba is a Cuban brand.

Cohiba is originally a brand made by Cubatabaco, which is owned by the Cuban Government. For over ten years though, General Cigar, an American company, has been selling ‘Cohiba’ cigars in the United States.

The legal dispute has arisen because General Cigar has trademarked Cohiba in the US, but there is an existing law that states well known brands are acknowledged in the US even if they are not officially registered here.

Recently, Manhattan Federal District Court Judge Robert Sweet enjoined General Cigar from using the Cohiba name. But Judge Sweet also stayed the injunction pending General Cigar’s appeal.

If General Cigar loses the appeal, it is possible that there could be no more ‘Cohiba’ cigars in the United States legally.

An expert cigar roller in Tampa, Florida named Wallace Reyes is currently attempting to roll a world record cigar. The cigar is planned to be 180 feet in length when finished, and will use over 30 pounds of tobacco. A cigar of that length would crush the current world record by 35 feet.

Clearly this is just a publicity stunt, but can you imagine attempting to draw on a 180 foot long stogie? You would need a Dyson Vacuum to get any smoke out of that thing.

Reuters is reporting that the Cuban Government is cutting back the acreage that will be used to grow tobacco by more than 30%. The main causes of this cutback are believed to be the worldwide economic recession and several smoking bans around the globe. These forces are combining to produce a severely lowered demand for Cuban cigars.

This lowered output will presumably cause the price of Cuban cigars to rise, which will not sit well with cigar smokers, but this cutback will be most detrimental to the families of farmers who depend on the tobacco crop to make a living.

None of this matters much to American cigar lovers however, as Cuban cigars are still illegal to buy, own, or smoke in this country. For more information on the legality of Cuban cigars in the US, see this article: Are Cuban Cigars Illegal?
